Good Weather, Soon Gone

I grieve. Four days of glorious weather are set to end tomorrow. I had not realized just how tired I am of warm coats and heavy socks.

I went out to see The Libertine with a few friends yesterday in order to avoid doing statistics homework.

The movie is not great. It has the redeeming qualities of interesting performances and good costumes and sets. But should you see it, be prepared for much, uh, salty language and, uh, uninhibited behavior.

It did have enough substance that I came home and searched out John Wilmont's biography on the web. It is called Lord Rochester's Monkey for the curious, and was heavily censored and/or outright banned in the 1930's when it was published due to the scandalous content. I expect it is relatively tame by today's standards. Mostly I want to read it because the movie never actually determined for me if Wilmont was in fact a genius destroyed by his demons or just a mildly talented man who thought too well of himself.

As part of the going through pictures at my Mom's on Saturday, I came across some old report cards from high school. It was amusing. I consistently got D's and F's in the two years I took typing. Yet more than 30 years later my livelihood is inextricably bound with pounding on a keyboard. Of course that was Ye Olde Manual machines with no erasing backspace. Gawd. I cringe to think of it.

I was surprised to see how uneven my performance was in English, and not surprised to see I was straight A's in history. I actually managed B's in bookeeping and chemistry. Where did that come from?

I wonder if it is worth revisiting the personal past. In so many ways I'm so different now.

One of the more distrubing things was coming across a picture of an old boyfriend who turned out bad. He was quite a respectable figure in the local community for years, then moved out to west. My mom tells me he was later convicted of having kiddie porn on his computer. Then was brought back east after serving his sentance for other sex related charges. Creepy. He once or twice wrote me love letters not that long ago. Even more creepy. I hope I've disappeared as far as he is concerned.
