Republicans Rule, Literally

And if I had thought there was an integrity left in government, I was so wrong.

On Monday Bloomberg News broke an embargo for the data on new home sales out of the lockup room at the Commerce Department.

The woman in charge was exceedingly angry and banned the three reporters responsible from the Commerce news lockups and said Bloomberg News would not be permitted in for the GDP report today or the personal income report tomorrow. There was to be an investigation and no doubt the Inspector General's office would have to take action.

Guess what? The same reporters were there today along with a Commerce Department official who declared that they took the break very seriously and retained the right to suspend anyone they felt was violating the rules.

I can picture Mayor Bloomberg calling up Secretary Guiterrez and saying, "Listen, Carlos, I know the guys did a bad thing, but really, we have to be there, and it was only new homes sales, not like it was something important."

You can bet that had it been any other news service, the sanctions would have stuck.

And how do you like Maryland Governor Erlich's choice of a running mate? A blind woman. I have no doubt Ms. Cox is perfectly competent person and worthy and all that. But to choose someone who is Secretary of Disabilities and who has never held an elected office? It does smack a bit of cynical manipulation.

I am reminded of the Peerage Handicapping System we used to joke about in the SCA.
