Elves Like Oatmeal

Elves are eating my breakfast.

More probably the overnight cleaning crew in the office has decided my stash of instant oatmeal is fair game. And box of breakfast bars I brought in has gone missing.

It is one of those things I hate to report. I don't like theft, even of so minor an item (remind me of this next time I steal a pencil from the supply room). But I have to wonder if someone out there is hungry. If they are, I'd hate to deny them food. Bother. I guess I'll try to move some things around to make them less accessible and see what happens.

I've mentioned the estranged friend (my fault) who is dying. I've sent a card basically saying I'm sorry this has happened to him. I hope it was received in the spirit in which it was sent.

When the news came out there was a great cry that we ought to get in our cars and all go have a big Sacred Harp (shape note singing) at his place. Saner heads prevailed, and the thought was scaled down to a small group going, then I suggested we should bring him and his wife here rather than going there. This has devolved into recording a Sacred Harp session on camcorder and sending it to him.

I don't know why this bothers me so much. Perhaps because I don't think virtual reality is a satisfactory substitute for real reality. Perhaps I think this is little more than an electronic greeting card. Perhaps I simply don't like the idea of being filmed, even in a large group. Yet under the circumstances, it may be the only practical way to send caring greetings from his old friends. His wife does not expect him to last until Thanksgiving. Bummer.

There's too much going on that gets me down right now. Dark mornings, unresolved money issues, bureaucratic stupidity, general lack of inspiration in life and the dying off of a generation. Must do something about this, and soon.

An hour later and suddenly I'm much cheerier. I checked the on-line site for the assignment results of the first week of my first psych class, and the prof wore "EXCELLENT response [sic]." As far as I can tell, I'm the only one to receive this assessment. Woo-hoo! Being older and able to write a coherent sentance does not hurt in college. What promised to be a dull class may be a little more interesting than I thought. We'll see how I feel after next week's grade. ;-)
