Honey, Why Does the Box in the Attic Have a Halo?

Either I'm going to burn in Hell or alienante everyone on Earth if I am not careful.

Yesterday a co-worker starts telling a long elaborate story about some devotional items in his family which sounds to me like it could have come off of TotalCrap.com, but who knows, I wasn't there when the stranger came to the door in the dead of winter during the Great Depression and left behind him a picture of the Virgin that managed to miraculously survive a fire in his great grandparnets home when nothing else in the room did, etc., etc.

However, when he got to the box of relics that contains a sliver of the True Cross, it was all I could do not to start a lecture on the reliquary industry of the Middle Ages.

Now, it is not that I don't believe in using items imbued with significance in religous practice; these can be a great aid in focus and meditation. Nor do I believe that all relics lack a connection with the orginal sacred. But piece of the True Cross? Perhaps they have the Holy Grail in the box as well?

I managed to stay quiet. There are times when it just isn't worth it to ask people to think about what they are saying.

By the way, did you know that among her ancestors the Queen of England can include the Prophet Mohammed? And the Bush family is related to Abraham Lincoln? Now there's a Republican pedigree.
