Reflections on Gyrth Oldcastle

It is times like these that we become aware of what is most important to us. The death of Duke Gyrth Oldcastle is a cause for celebration of the most solemn sort. There was a man whose life was inextricably linked with so many others. One could laud him simply for his devotion to his wife and son, so rare in the world. But he also created a larger family in an SCA household whose members reflect the greatness of his teachings for both mind and body. On a wider stage he was involved in the formation of a kingdom and setting the tone of its growth.

The SCA is a little reality unto itself, and at times what we see is petty and vainglorius, but Gyrth was neither of these. He was a man of keen intelligence, piercing wit and unfailing adherence to seeking the greater good. He was not without flaws, and I have seen him make mistakes, but I never saw him fail to take responsibility for himself or those in his care. One of the good guys is gone, and we are indeed the less for it.
