My Idea of Fun

My idea of fun: go to a lecture on the Black Death in medieval Europe. This is the first event I plan to attend on my new Smithsonian Resident Associate membership. Of course the last one, admittedly some time ago, was about a famous Venetian courtesan. And, coincidently, my companion to both was and will be KnitGeek. At least I have friends as eclectic in their tastes as I.

At work, which by no definition of which I am aware could be called fun, I am suffering through the Bush administration's 60-cities-in-60-days-convince-the-world-that-Social-Security-is-doomed tour. Now, I do buy into the notion that SS has problems and needs attention. But as far as I can tell some very good and very moderate suggestions have been put forward to correct these problems. Yet our beloved president rejects them in favor of some vague notions of his own and his plan for private accounts. As far as I can tell he's adopted the strategy of constant repetition to get his own way. Why not? It has worked before. And he and his people are doing a thing I have always hated; they constantly say they are open to all ideas, yet reject anything that isn't their own. It isn't compromise, it's trying to maintain the appearance of fairness without the slightest intention of yielding. And again, why not? Enough people buy it. Grrr.

I'm thinking that mountain top in West Virginia and a shotgun are starting to look good again. Nah, I'm not willing to deal with more decorating issues yet, even for a picturesque shack.

BTW, the painters are done! Into the home stretch!
