Hurricane Rants and Raves

Ah, our beloved Prez is once more heading down to storm central to show his caring and compassion. He'd do better to send some fuel tankers. Honestly, how can he think anyone buys the "I really care" act? He doesn't go anywhewre unless it is to cheering prearranged audiences or self-aggrandizing photo ops. It is not like he'll actually share in anyone's suffering. Boo. Hiss.

The image of a 100-mile traffic jam as Texans try to leave as instructed is just terrifying. If any lesson is to be learned out of this and the Katrina disaster it is just how difficult it is to evacuate any sizable population. Would you rather face a hurricane in your home or stranded on highway with no realistic hope of gasoline? And this is with three or four days to handle the situation. Doubtless the people will be largely out of the area by later today and the evacuation will be successful.

And let me not get started on the various government agencies bragging about how prepared they are. If this was the first major hurricane of the season, we'd still be in bad shape. I strongly suspect the reason all the supplies are in place now is simply because they were in the pipeline from Katrina relief.

Dear gods, let the egos be shattered and humbled, and better for the experience. We need realistic planning, not political expediency. And a way of life that is in better rhythm with how the planet works rather than foolishly trying to make it serve us. Grrr.
