Red Dye #40, I think, is cochineal. My former boss was Jain, and he would not eat foods that had that red dye in them....

You can't get to be much more of a serious vegetarian than a Jain. But apparently the issue is not so much animal matter as an allergen. But good to know, just in case I have to add it to the foods to avoid list.
