2 possible places to obtain evidence: DMV, which keeps records on a title's ownership; and CarFax.

Amazing how a little good advice can turn the day around. CarFax provided the necessary info, which I am sending off to the tax man tomorrow. I hope it will take care of business.

I had something similar happen to me when I sold my first house 12 years ago. The new owners put a car up on blocks in the driveway and I got a phone call from the police asking me to either move the car, cover it, or get it towed. At least the officer accepted my statement that I hadn't owned the property or lived there in over a year, and was able to immediately via his DMV records.
