Inauguration Day Thoughts

I've worked in downtown DC for 20 years. My first day of work at the former DRI was the second Reagan inauguration, the one where outdoor celebrations were cancalled because it was so cold. That is my only inauguration memory in a span that includes Bush I, both Clinton presidencies, and the first Bush II. Are these events so ephemeral that they simply don't register in the greater consciousness? I'm sure the major participants care, but on the broader stage, do they matter?

If I take anything from yesterday's events it will be the image of beautifully groomed women of a certain age wearing fur coats. And the truly annoying lousy clone of Elle Pherson (overweight and bad blond highlights) in her pink and white checked suit and three large Bush buttons with her loud nasal voice talking to her friends on the Metro going home. Even the protestors were quiet and well-behaved in comparison.

Such is the view from the sidelines of history.
