Not Good News

My mother is going to die and there's not a damn thing that can be done to stop it. Not that my mother was never going to die (Moms are immortal, aren't they?), but the reality is pretty much in the here and now.

Her cancer has reached the bones of her spine. The doctors are trying to figure out if they can do more radiation treatments without damaging her spinal cord which would result in paralysis. Of course the growth of the tumor will probably have the same result, and possibly sooner.

This wasn't supposed to happen. She was supposed to have one operation that would be curative and then we'd have her for 10 more years. Now we've got maybe two, and very probably less. The tumor is proving quite aggressive and the fear is it will metatisize to her brain. The pain is expected to be considerable.

This was not a day of happy news. The good part is that Mom is calm and in control, and those siblings that I spent time with are all in agreement that we will do our best to make her comfortable and happy in whatever time is left, and do so on her terms. Yippee. Sort of. At least Mom looks good in her wig.

And what do I come home to? Unhappy, hungry kitties who started fighting as soon as they were fed. More Yippee. Maybe I should have had children. One can at least hope they will grow out of it.

Ah well, there's the weekend to look forward to, with the promise of some good moments. The weather is expected to be excellent at tomorrow's SCA event, and on Sunday I get to see Othello with Avery Brooks. And maybe lunch at Bistro D'Oc? Mmmmm.
