Serenity Deaths

Since everyone who reads my diary seems to have seen Serenity or won't care ...

Ok, I teared up when Shepard Book died and felt for Zoe when Wash bought the farm. Gotta give a lot of credit to Whedon, though, because he's not afraid to kill off a character when the story arc calls for it. Of course Ron Glass and Alan Tudyk might just not have wanted to continue playing those characters, so Whedon took the opportunity to give them good deaths. Whichever, it gives the movie the kind of depth you don't get to see very often. Life hurts, and life on the "raggedy edge" is fragile at best. People get hurt and die in combat, and while the survivors carry on, there is always a price.

But now I wonder about Book's secrets that we'll probably never know and if Zoe will become even more shut off without Wash to bring her joy.

And will probably never know because the movie didn't do the kind of business in its first weekend that makes more sequels the apple of a studio's eye. Of course the movie DVD will probably sell as well as the TV series did, so that's something.

But I surely would like to see a bit more of Mal and his crew again. And what was that shot the Simon gave Mal at the start? ... Damn, need to go back again and see if it is clearer next time. No harm there, because it is worth another look.
