Going to England For Sure

I've committed to my trip to England. Yeah! Yes, I'm going in January since it is the only available time between semesters. But as my father once observed, one doesn't go to England for the weather.

I am greatly relieved that I actually have enough frequent flyer miles to go business class. I'm not a big person, but spending 8 hours imitating a Swiss army knife is enough to take any pleasure out of the travel itself. And after some of the, ah, inconveniences of last February's trip to Florence, that bit of extra space won't go amiss. Plus it is a nonstop. So all to the good there.

Now I'm contemplating a BritRail pass. Is the first class ticket worth the extra money? And will it take me where I want to go? And I think you need a separate pass for the London underground? Much Internet sleuthing needs to be done. Although I am sure that among my acquaintance I can find those to advise me wisely. ;-)

I also am wondering whether it would be better to do day trips out of London or come up with an itinerary. I loathe hauling luggage around, so probably a home base is the better choice. Ah well, time enough to sort through the details.

I've done the honest thing and written the old friend towards whom I no longer feel any particular connection. Whether it is the wise thing or not, I'll find out soon enough. Does it make sense to say it is nothing personal? Just a normal sort of drifting apart and realization that circumstances no longer support the ties? I really struggled with whether to leave him in the dark. Where would the harm be in that? Except that it leaves me feeling guilty and him clueless, and at some day in the future it might be worse to discover the truth. I have a long-held maxim that there is no situation that cannot be made worse by ignoring it.

I'm hating myself with intensity today.

The reissuance of TV shows on DVD is proving to be one of life's small pleasures. I didn't discover the Due South show until it was briefly in syndication. It was recently re-released on DVD, and in a rare move (for me) I bought the whole set. Surprisingly, or perhaps not, it is still good. The music was a big selling point for me, and on the whole it has held up well. Although the hair, clothes and cell phones are so dated now.
