Being Political Today

I'm rather amused and peeved at the same time by all the sturm und drang about unbundling cable services. The providers are bewailing that it will cost consumers more (don't you just love their watching out for us?) and that it will make life difficult for them if they have to spend more to advertise their programs in places other than their sibling channels.

My pity is quite limited. If we live in a free market society, and the market place demands a la carte services, then that is what we should have. Probably the price per channel is cheaper in a bundle, but if I don't watch the channels in the bundle, then it isn't particularly cost effective.

And, as a friend who recently got satellite TV observed, "we have many more channels, but there is still nothing on."

Let us consumers vote with our pocketbooks, let the weak in broadcasting die, and let me just get Sci-Fi in addition to the standard line up.

I am so not looking forward to listening to our beloved Prez's speech on Iraq today. Other than having no expectations of hearing anything he hasn't already said or self-serving congratulations on the progress in Iraq, I can't get past the issue that we shouldn't be in this mess to start with. I'm not going to give that evil theocratic meglomaniac any credit for filling in an inch of the very deep hole he's dug for us.

I disliked Reagan as well, but at least you can give him a certain amount of credit for waiting out the enemy.
