King King Review (Not Favorable)

Attn: Spoilers on King Kong!

I'm just back from seeing The Perils of Anne Darrow, better known as King Kong. With apologies to those of you who loved it, I didn't. I guess I have lost the abililty to immerse myself someone else's vision. All I could think was that if the joyride provided by Kong wasn't enough to snap her pretty little neck, Anne Darrow should have been so battered and bruised she could not have performed her cute little acrobatic display to charm the ape, much less trying to outrun a bunch of raptors. I might have bought into the ending a bit more had she been a teensy bit more frightened of being many hundreds of feet above the ground and having airplanes fly at her spitting bullets. There's brave and caring and then there's screenplay posturing.

If you go for a special effects show, you'll be very satisfied. That part is superbly done. But Peter Jackson does not know when to stop, like an adolescent boy wringing a joke out that still amuses him, but has long past the point of annoyance for everyone else. Skull Island is mightily equiped to kill everything on it. The red shirt factor is high and way past plausible.

A little less high adventure and a little more humanity might have served the film better. Also convincing people not to bring small children who are bored, unhappy and/or frightened. The theater had no less than three parties of such, including parents who refused to take the kid out of the auditorium.

What is the world coming to?
